Whanganui General Ward
The Whanganui District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). ten councillors will be elected from the Whanganui ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.     Stop focus on carbon and focus on flooding issues instead.

  • Invest in riparian planting and wetland restoration to reduce flooding whilst supporting native wildlife.

    Eliminate single-use plastics from council operations to protect life from devastating pollution.

    Establish circular economy hubs to reduce waste and strengthen community resilience.

  • Seek information on the areas of Whanganui that will be affected by rising sea levels and flooding and act accordingly.

    Restrict development in areas that will be negatively affected by climate change.

    Work with civil defence and other agencies to ensure plans are in place to best protect people and property from climate disaster.

  • Review the roadmap to reduce emissions which Whanganui District Council created after conducting greenhouse gas stocktake to measure our impact.

    Conduct audits of electricity and gas use and reduce consumption while investigating renewable energy.

    Stay the course with the Whanganui District Council climate change strategy, keep focused and lead by example.

  • Ensure sufficient funding is budgeted to achieve the initiatives already identified in our emissions reduction roadmap.

    Ensure civil defence is appropriately resourced to deliver ongoing training and support to isolated flood-prone communities.

    Lobby central government to ensure the RMA reforms give clarity and guidance on climate adaptation, including managed retreat.
