Utilities and services
Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

Introduce island-wide food waste pickup to be processed on the island and advocate for infrastructure to support this.
Improve stormwater systems to reduce the amount of sediment and rubbish reaching the sea.
Redistribute rates to return to Waiheke for services needed on the island for islanders.
Introduce septic system rehabilitation fund for owners who meet low-income thresholds.
Incorporate household food waste into weekly collection, generating nutrient-rich compost available to all households, for food resilience.
Address challenges posed by climate change, including culvert and stormwater management.
Ensure elders can age in place with dignity by providing reliable health services, better transport and suitable housing.
Secure Waiheke's essential infrastructure by building strong relationships with council and government to get proper funding.
