Utilities and services
Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.
Ensure the council provides frequent and reliable bin collection.
Invest in water and wastewater infrastructure, not vanity projects or political distractions.
Streamline consent and dog registration to reduce delays, costs and fees for residents.
Support investment of $100 million over the next several years to ensure the best Three Waters services.
Support waste educators to deliver programmes to reduce and rethink waste, making the district a cleaner and better place to live.
Support owners of 14,000 dogs with facilities that make the district dog friendly and safe.
Ensure safe, reliable and affordable drinking water, waste water and storm water under council control.
Stocktake council-owned land and assess viability of conversion to renewable electricity generation assets such as solar farms.
Develop a district-wide composting approach to raise awareness of benefits to local soil and reduce food waste going to landfill.
Support establishment of the Ratepayers Assistance Scheme with electrification loans as a core incentive that benefits the environment.
Ensure the council continues to manage storm, waste and drinking water responsibilities well and keep them under local control.
Continue to build and improve internet connectivity throughout the district.
Ensure areas with regular drainage problems are addressed.
Commit to increasing budget for roading infrastructure including footpaths as roading has been underfunded historically and lobby NZTA for funds.
Introduce improved levels of service for drainage and maintenance, support drainage advisory groups and address undercurrents at Mandeville.
Commit to an in-house business unit for water services owned by ratepayers and seek chlorine exemptions for urban water supplies.
