Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.
Undertake a long-term plan on the climate change risk, potential impacts, required actions, costs and its level of priority.
Support existing emergency management and civil defence strategies including advancing community response awareness initiatives.
Ensure council meets all obligations regarding climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.
Encourage greenhouse gas emission reductions through fuel and energy efficiency across the district, including vehicles and building designs.
Commit to thoroughly and regularly updating and reviewing all civil defence policies, including potentially reversing past decisions on sirens if warranted.
