Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.
Support nature-based solutions to reduce flood and erosion risks and strengthen civil defence readiness across the region.
Advocate for low-emission council operations and transport and promote climate-smart land use and infrastructure planning.
Encourage community-led adaptation and education initiatives.
Commit to enhancing sustainable practices outlined in the long-term regional plan.
Provide leadership by promoting sustainable practices across the region.
Advocate for increased input from climate science and incorporate farming practices that are both economically and environmentally viable.
Work on the land and freshwater plan which council has already started to help deliver cleaner water in our rivers.
Reduce the use of trucks on the road by promoting rail for freight and public transport.
Look at opening up the Stratford Okahukura railway line to provide an alternative route in and out of Taranaki.
