Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

Provide safe wastewater systems to protect kaimoana, swimming spots and drinking water from contamination.
Support waste minimisation by delivering the strategy, seeking feedback and exploring waste collection as part of rates.
Support proactive animal control through education, collaboration with shelters and advocacy groups and more severe enforcement when required.
Encourage more recycling of plastics and similar waste products to limit the amount of plastic consumed.
Co-operate with other councils on plans for a waste incineration plant as a top priority.
Develop a better system for removing roadside rubbish dropped by the public, addressing the unacceptable amount of rubbish on roads.

Invest in water and wastewater infrastructure rather than vanity projects or political distractions.
Streamline consents and dog registration to reduce delays, costs and fees for residents.
Support the regional waters services delivery entity under development to bring down total cost of services.
Support the animal control team in their particularly noble and challenging career choice requiring compassion.
Advocate for much harsher penalties for littering and fly tipping, enforcing zero tolerance for illegal dumping leading to environmental degradation.
